For many travellers, public transport is often the fastest way to get to know a city in its real sense, as it gives a peek into daily life while making it easier to navigate busy streets.Recently, an American content creator decided to document her very first ride into Mumbai’s metro system, and what began as a simple travel clip turned into a full-blown comparison between two of the world’s busiest cities, Mumbai and New York, and the internet has plenty to say about it.

American content creator says Mumbai metro is cleaner than that of New York

An American content creator named Liz, who recently rode the Mumbai Metro for the first time, took to Instagram to share her experiences online. The clip, from the account run by Liz and her partner Shiv, begins with her arriving at the station. “I’m in Mumbai and taking the metro for the first time,” she says, before breaking into an excited “Chalo, chalo.”The first thing that caught her eye was the ticket price. According to Liz in the video, she was surprised the fare came to just Rs 20. She also praised the upkeep of the station itself, saying, “The station’s so clean, and I love the doors here,” referring to the platform screen doors that separate commuters from the tracks — a safety feature she hadn’t expected to find.Safety and comfort stood out to her as the ride continued. “It’s so safe,” she remarked, before adding, “Wow, first impression, it’s so much cleaner than the Metro New York”. Given Mumbai’s characteristic heat and humidity, the air conditioning inside the coach was another pleasant surprise. “It’s really cold. It’s so hot in Mumbai, so the air conditioning feels so nice,” she said.ID@undefined Caption not available.ID@undefined Caption not available.ID@undefined Caption not available.ID@undefined Caption not available.ID@undefined Caption not available.

She separately appreciated the women’s compartment

One feature Liz particularly pointed out as entirely new to her was the dedicated women’s compartment. “Over here, they have the women’s compartment, and I haven’t seen that in any other countries,” she said, before wrapping up her review with high praise, saying, “The metro here is excellent. America needs to learn from India.” She further added, ” the metro here is excellent, America clearly needs to learn from India”.

Social media reactions

The video quickly went viral online, with many Indian users agreeing that the Mumbai Metro holds its own against, or even surpasses, transit systems abroad. Reactions flooded the post with one commenter writing, “Welcome to aamchi Mumbai”. Others thanked Liz for her honest and refreshing review of the city, “Finally Someone said it.”Another suggested trying the city’s underground Aqua Line for a follow-up ride, “Try aqua line the underground metro in mumbai.”One comment also provided context on the women’s compartment, noting it exists as a safeguard against harassment on public transport, “Woman compartments are because they are the risk of women’s harassment and outrages of her modesty. Cleaning fact has improved.Well done Mumbai”.
