Amazon layoffs hit India again: E-commerce giant cuts fewer than 1,000 jobs globally, employees reportedly affected in IndiaAmazon has announced another round of job cuts, and employees in India are among those reportedly affected. The latest workforce reduction impacts fewer than 1,000 white-collar employees across the US, India and the UK, according to Reuters. The fresh layoffs come months after Amazon went through a much larger restructuring that saw around 30,000 corporate jobs cut between last year and January 2026. The latest move is focused mainly on the company’s Stores business, which oversees its core e-commerce operations.

Amazon layoffs: Employees in India among those affected

The latest round came as Amazon’s Prime Big Deal Days shopping event was underway. Employees began sharing news of the cuts on internal Slack channels, with workers in India and the UK reportedly among those receiving the news.According to Reuters, the affected areas include customer service and selling partner services, although other Amazon teams may also have been impacted.Amazon confirmed the cuts, describing them as a “small number” of roles, mainly within its Stores division.“We’ve adjusted parts of our Stores business because we believe this structure will better enable us to deliver on our priorities,” an Amazon spokesperson said in a statement cited by Reuters. The company said it was supporting employees affected by the changes.

Why is Amazon cutting jobs again?

The latest layoffs are part of a broader effort under CEO Andy Jassy to simplify Amazon’s corporate structure and reduce bureaucracy. The company has been making repeated workforce adjustments since its pandemic-era hiring boom.Amazon’s larger restructuring saw about 30,000 corporate jobs eliminated between October 2025 and January 2026. Reuters reported that the company had previously said those cuts were aimed at reducing layers, increasing ownership and removing bureaucracy. And the job cuts haven’t been limited to one massive round. Amazon has continued making smaller, targeted reductions across different parts of the business.

Jeff Bezos on Amazon’s job cuts

Amazon founder and executive chairman Jeff Bezos also addressed the layoffs in a Fox News interview aired Wednesday. He said the company had hired heavily during the pandemic when people were staying home and ordering more online.Bezos said the company had significantly increased its headcount during that period and that the subsequent cuts were necessary as Amazon adjusted to the post-pandemic environment. Reuters reported his comments in its latest report on the layoffs. For Amazon employees in India, the latest cuts are another reminder that the company’s restructuring is far from over. The new round may be much smaller than the tens of thousands of jobs eliminated previously, but it comes at a time when Amazon continues to reshape how its businesses and teams are organised.
