The fast is observed by women for the longevity and well being of their husbands. Kardaiyan Nombu is celebrated when the two Tamil months – Panguni and Massi take place. Kardaiyan Nombu is one of the most significant festivals. On this auspicious day, married women keep a severe fast in order to protect their husbands. Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, and Karnataka are the states that celebrate this festival the most. The day is celebrated with great joy and enthusiasm. Karadai refers to a specific naivedya (holy meal), while Nombu means upvasam or vratam. Karadaiyan Nombu is observed as a means of commemorating the story of “Satyvan-Savitri.” According to the scriptures, Savitri was a princess, who devoted her life to her husband. Married women observe fast on Karadaiyan Nombu for the longevity and well being of their husbands, while single women observe this fast for the ideal partner.

1. Women wake up early in the morning and observe strict fast on this day.2. A unique naivedya called “Karadai Nombu Adai” is made on Karadaiyan Nombu.3. According to mythological tales, Savitri cooked this unique dish and gave it, along with some unsalted butter, to Lord Yama, the Hindu God of Death to show the gratitude for saving her husband Satyvan’s life.4. Women worship Goddess Gauri and give her offerings of Karadaiyan Nombu Naivedyam.5. Chant various Vedic Mantras.6. Women wear “Karadai Nombu Saradu,” or yellow-colored thread, around one’s neck is a major tradition on Karadaiyan Nombu. This yellow thread is also attached to a tiny flower. This thread is tied for the husbands’ welfare.7. Women also apply kolam and decorate their homes.
