Mother Dairy hikes milk prices by Rs 2 per litre from May 14

Mother Dairy has increased milk prices by Rs 2 per litre across key variants effective Thursday, citing higher procurement and input costs, PTI reported on Wednesday. The company said the revision was necessitated due to a sustained rise of around 6 per cent in farmer procurement prices over the past year, despite efforts to minimise the impact on consumers. “The revision has been necessitated in view of the sustained increase in farmer procurement prices, of around 6 per cent over the past one year, despite continued efforts to limit the impact on consumers,” Mother Dairy said in a statement. Mother Dairy said the current hike represents only a partial pass-through of increased costs and aims at “maintaining a fair balance between farmer welfare and consumer interests”. The company noted that nearly 75-80 per cent of its milk sales realisation is passed on to farmers. In the Delhi-NCR market, prices of toned milk (bulk vended) have been raised to Rs 58 per litre from Rs 56 per litre, while toned milk (pouched) will now cost Rs 60 per litre against Rs 58 earlier. Full cream milk will now be priced at Rs 72 per litre, double toned milk at Rs 54 per litre and cow milk at Rs 62 per litre, up from Rs 60 earlier. Mother Dairy sells around 35 lakh litres of milk per day in the Delhi-NCR market through its own outlets, general trade and e-commerce platforms. The last milk price revision by the company was carried out in April 2025. Mother Dairy, a wholly owned subsidiary of the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB), reported a 17 per cent rise in turnover to Rs 20,300 crore in the last financial year, driven by higher demand for milk products and edible oils.Simultaneously, Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF), which markets products under the Amul brand, also raised milk prices by Rs 2 per litre across India.The latest back-to-back price revisions by two of India’s largest dairy brands come amid rising costs of cattle feed, fuel, packaging material and procurement from farmers.Amul had said the increase was necessary due to a “substantial increase” in the cost of cattle feed, milk packaging film and fuel. The cooperative had also stated that its member unions raised farmers’ procurement prices by Rs 30 per kg of fat, marking a 3.7 per cent increase over May 2025 levels.The Amul hike, effective from May 14, translated into an increase of around 2.5-3.5 per cent per litre across major fresh pouch milk variants. The previous milk price increase by Amul was implemented on May 1, 2025.
