At 22, Robert Lennox-Hvenekilde made a decision that sounds almost unbelievable today. Instead of putting his savings toward a city home, he bought roughly 7.5 acres of undeveloped jungle in Colombia for about $40,000. The Danish adventurer now wants to build a simple, off-grid life around the land rather than around a mortgage, traffic and city routines.
A trip at 19 changed what he wanted
Robert first visited Colombia when he was 19. What stayed with him was not simply the landscape, but the way some people around him lived.He told Newsweek that he saw people who were not necessarily wealthy in financial terms but appeared to have a strong sense of freedom and quality of life. That experience eventually became a reason to return and build something of his own.The idea was unusual, but it was not an overnight impulse. He worked and saved for years before making the purchase.
His property is far from an ordinary plot
The land has freshwater streams, mature avocado trees, sugar cane and other fruit-bearing plants. Robert has said his avocado trees alone can produce more than a tonne of fruit in a season.There is also an important difference between buying a piece of jungle and simply clearing it to build a house.Robert has said he does not want to cut down the native jungle. Instead, he plans to use existing production trees on the property for timber while protecting the surrounding ecosystem.
Why choose this over a city home?
For Robert, the purchase appears to be less about property and more about control over everyday life.He wants to grow food, build his own shelter and reduce his dependence on conventional expenses. It is a very different definition of security: fewer possessions, more land and the ability to produce at least some of what he needs.
The jungle dream comes with real responsibilities
It would be easy to romanticise Robert’s decision as simply an escape from modern life. But living off-grid is not the same as taking a permanent holiday.There are practical questions around healthcare, transport, construction, food production, safety and maintaining a sustainable relationship with the land. His stated intention to preserve native vegetation and create habitat for local wildlife therefore matters as much as the cabin itself.
A different idea of what “home” means
Robert’s story is interesting because he did not simply buy a cheaper house. He chose a completely different definition of home.At an age when many people are deciding which city to move to, he decided that the city was not what he wanted at all.
