'I never even dreamed': Sachana Namidass gets emotional, thanks parents after winning National Award for 'Maharaja'

The declaration of the 72nd National Film Awards for 2024 turned out to be a memorable day for Tamil cinema as ‘Maharaja’ bagged multiple honours. While stunt choreographer Anl Arasu received the National Award for Best Action Direction, young actress Sachana Namidass earned the Best Supporting Actress award for her moving performance in the film. Soon after the news became official, an emotional video of Sachana went viral online. Unable to hold back her tears, the actress thanked everyone who stood by her and shared how the prestigious recognition was far beyond anything she had imagined.

Sachana breaks down in emotions

Speaking to reporters after the announcement, Sachana struggled to hide her emotions. “I never even dreamed that I would receive a National Award. This honour is much bigger than any dream I ever had. I am truly happy at this moment,” she said. She also thanked the audience for accepting her work. “I sincerely thank everyone for the love they have shown me. This award belongs to my father, mother, and sister as much as it belongs to me. I am standing here today only because of their constant support,” she added.

Sachana’s difficult path to success

Sachana also opened up about the difficult path that brought her to the National Award stage. “My father is an auto driver, and my mother works as a tailor. I studied in a government school, and we come from a middle-class family. There were times when we did not even have money to pay my school fees. My sister and I studied with scholarships,” she recalled. The actress revealed that even arranging Rs 500 was a struggle for the family on several occasions. “Even in those tough days, my parents gave us everything they could. They never stopped believing in me,” she said.

Sachana’s years of hard work finally pay off

Looking back at her journey, Sachana said her family had visited countless production houses in search of even a small opportunity. “Since 2018, we have been going from one production company to another, hoping someone would give me a chance to act. Every rejection taught me something. Today, this National Award feels like the reward for all those years of struggle and hard work,” she shared. Ending on an emotional note, the actress said, “More than me, it is my family that is happiest today.” Her heartfelt words and inspiring journey have inspired many and her National Award win is one of the most celebrated moments of this year’s honours.
