Maharashtra hikes veterinary interns’ stipend by 64%, monthly payout raised from Rs 11,000 to Rs 18,000
The Maharashtra cabinet has approved a 64% hike in the monthly stipend for eligible final-year veterinary students, increasing financial support during their compulsory one-year internship.

The Maharashtra government has increased the monthly internship stipend for final-year veterinary students from Rs 11,000 to Rs 18,000, providing an additional Rs 7,000 to students undergoing compulsory clinical training. The state cabinet approved the proposal at its meeting on November 4, 2026.The revised stipend will benefit eligible students pursuing veterinary courses under the Maharashtra Animal and Fishery Sciences University (MAFSU). The increase is expected to provide financial support to interns who undertake a one-year compulsory internship as part of their degree programme.Under the revised arrangement, the Maharashtra government will contribute Rs 15,000 towards the monthly stipend, while the remaining Rs 3,000 will be funded by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) and MAFSU. The contribution from these institutions will be adjusted across the two halves of the internship period.

Maharashtra veterinary internship stipend increased by Rs 7,000

The cabinet decision raises the monthly financial assistance for veterinary interns by nearly 64% compared with the earlier amount. Students who were previously receiving Rs 11,000 will now be entitled to Rs 18,000 per month during the eligible internship period. The increase takes into account the expenses students incur while completing their compulsory clinical training. Accommodation, food and transportation are among the costs that interns have to manage while working at veterinary facilities. The revised amount is intended to ease this financial burden and provide students with better support during the transition from academic training to practical veterinary work.

Who will receive the revised veterinary internship stipend?

The increased stipend will apply to eligible final-year veterinary students enrolled under Maharashtra Animal and Fishery Sciences University. The benefit is intended for students undertaking the compulsory one-year internship prescribed under Veterinary Council of India rules.During this period, students work as intern veterinarians and gain practical experience in animal healthcare. Their training includes clinical exposure at veterinary facilities, including clinics operated by the state Animal Husbandry Department. The internship provides students with an opportunity to apply their academic knowledge to the treatment and management of animals. It also exposes them to the challenges associated with veterinary healthcare delivery, particularly in rural areas.

How will the Rs 18,000 monthly stipend be funded?

The revised monthly stipend of Rs 18,000 will be supported through contributions from three institutions: the Maharashtra government, ICAR and MAFSU.The state government will provide Rs 15,000 every month. The remaining Rs 3,000 will be contributed by ICAR during the first six months and by MAFSU during the subsequent six months. The funding arrangement for the one-year internship is as follows:

Internship period Maharashtra government ICAR MAFSU Total
First six months Rs 15,000 Rs 3,000 Nil Rs 18,000
Last six months Rs 15,000 Nil Rs 3,000 Rs 18,000

This arrangement ensures that eligible interns receive the revised amount throughout the 12-month internship period.

Why has Maharashtra increased the veterinary internship stipend?

The increase comes against the backdrop of rising living expenses and the financial requirements associated with compulsory professional training. Veterinary interns spend a considerable part of their training period working in clinical settings, where they are expected to gain hands-on experience in animal treatment and healthcare. The earlier stipend of Rs 11,000 was intended to help students meet their basic expenses during the internship. However, the revised amount of Rs 18,000 is expected to offer greater financial assistance towards accommodation, food, and commuting. The decision also has implications for veterinary healthcare services in rural Maharashtra. Interns working at government veterinary clinics contribute to the availability of personnel involved in animal treatment. Better financial support could encourage students to undertake clinical assignments, including those in rural locations. For farmers and livestock owners, the availability of veterinary personnel is important for timely treatment, disease management and animal healthcare. The increased stipend is therefore expected to support veterinary students while also strengthening the state’s efforts to make animal healthcare services more accessible. With the cabinet approving the revised amount, eligible final-year veterinary students will receive a higher monthly stipend during their compulsory internship, subject to the applicable implementation arrangements.
